Preschool Music Classes designed just for you! Early exposure to quality music literature both sung and recorded with expressive responses, establishes musical skills for a lifetime. Preschool music at Ars Nova uses a developmentally designed curriculum, emphasizing the music elements of steady beat, rhythm, and pitch through the context of song, chants, movement, books, and instruments inspired by the research and teachings of renowned music educator John Feierabend. With interactive and hands-on experiences, children and parents will join in play, fun, and laughter. Come together for games and activities that will heighten our enjoyment of music and build the foundation for musical literacy that will prepare us to take music with us as we grow, equipping us for all future musical endeavors whether vocal or instrumental.
Children's Music Instructor and Children's Harp Teacher
Kathryn began studying the harp in the third grade. She studied with renowned harpist Carol McClure for eight years in Nashville, Tennessee.While in high school, Kathryn was the principal harpist with the Alabama All-State Orchestra for three years and the principal harpist with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra for six years. Kathryn won numerous awards including first place in the Huntsville Symphony Concerto Competition and first place in the Huntsville Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, performing as a featured soloist on both the Huntsville Symphony’s Young Artist Concert and the Huntsville’s Youth Orchestra’s Spring Concert.
Kathryn received a top music scholarship to attend Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and studied with the Alabama Symphony’s principal harpist Judith Sullivan Hicks. Kathryn regularly performed as the principal harpist of the Samford University Orchestra and the Samford University Wind Ensemble. While in college, Kathryn won numerous awards including second place in the Alabama Federation of Music Study Clubs Biennial Student Awards and second place in the Birmingham Music Guild Scholarship Awards. She was also a featured performer in the Samford University School of the Arts Honors Recital twice and was a finalist in the Samford Univeristy Concerto Aria Competition allowing her to perform as a solo artist with the Samford University Orchestra on their annual Concerto Aria Concert. She graduated summa cum laude from Samford University with a bachelors in Harp Performance
Kathryn also has a Masters of Music in Music Education degree from Samford University. While in graduate school she continued to study the harp collegiately and earned a certificate in harp performance after the completion of her graduate recital.She has taught elementary and middle school music and choir at Sparkman High School, Westminster Christian Academy, Randolph School, and Covenant Christian Academy. She has been a children’s choir director for sixteen years, with choirs at First Baptist Huntsville, Dawson Memorial Baptist, Mountain Brook Baptist, and Baptist Church of the Covenant.
